Can Buying a New Air Conditioner Save Me Money?

As a general rule of thumb, homeowners believe that it’s cheaper to repair their AC units rather than replace them. That’s true in some cases, and a residential HVAC maintenance plan can keep AC units running longer. In the end, though, repairing an aging air conditioner might not be worth the time or money.

When Should You Replace an Aging AC Unit?

Many homeowners wonder when they should replace their AC units. They mistakenly believe that they can keep using the units until they completely break down. In reality, this could cost a lot more money than replacing the units.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, you could save 20% to 40% on your annual cooling bill even if your AC unit is 10 years old. The actual percentage depends on the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating of your current model. While most AC units are designed to last for close to 20 years, it might be more cost-efficient to upgrade early.

What to Look For in a New Air Conditioner

There are two main factors to consider when choosing air conditioning installation over repair. First, you have to ensure that the AC unit is strong enough to cool your entire home. The higher the BTU of the unit, the more square footage that it can cool.

Next, you have to pay attention to the SEER. The higher the SEER, the more energy-efficient the unit will be. SEERs currently range from 13 to 21, with 21 being the best. Of course, a unit with a high SEER will cost more than one with a low SEER. However, this cost is usually offset by how much less it costs to run the unit.
